Having an office based AEC allows us to perform endoscopic procedures in an attractive setting at a significant cost savings to our patients. When necessary, we also perform endoscopic procedures at Holy Cross Hospital (Silver Spring, MD) and Suburban Hospital (Bethesda, MD).
Procedures commonly performed in the center include EGD (visual inspection of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum), and colonoscopy (visual inspection of the large intestine). Staff doctors are able to directly detect ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, small growths such as polyps, and even early cancers of the the gastrointestinal tracy. Many of these lesions can be treated through the endoscope thus avoiding major surgery.
Our endoscopy center patients receive safe, carefully monitored sedation provided by the staff of Montgomery Anesthesia. Anesthesia providers include anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists(CRNA).
We understand that you may have heard the recent news regarding infections associated with duodenoscopes. Duodenoscopes are specialized camera scopes that are used during ERCP procedures. Some of you have asked about whether you should be concerned about your upcoming procedure at our center because of these news.
We want you to know that we do NOT use these kind of scopes at our center, as we do not perform ERCP here. The duodenoscopes in question are different from the endoscopes used for upper endoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy.
Your health and safety are our primary concern; we are AAAHC-accredited and adhere to rigorous established cleaning and high level disinfection protocols for our endoscopy equipment. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
